Legacy Nurse’s Nook

Meagan Imsand, BSN, RN

Welcome to the Nook!

As your child’s school nurse, my goals are to promote good health and healthy habits and prevent the spread of illness in our school and community. Working together with you and the staff here at Legacy, I hope to decrease the time your child spends out of the classroom related to chronic or actue illness.  I will post updates and pertinent information here, and through our Kinsa message board, as the updates pertain to illness. If you have not signed up for our group, you can find the instructions for downloading the app and signing up for the group through the link on the right. While the free thermometer is not available any longer, you can either purchase one (Target often has them on sale) or use the group and family features without the thermometer. If your child has a medical condition that I need to be aware of, such as asthma or a severe allergy, please contact me at 256-851-4630 ext. 54010 or by email at mimsand@mcssk12.org. Thank you for working with me to keep your child and our school healthy! I look forward to another great school year!

Getting Ready for Next Fall

If your child will need medication at school next fall, all the needed paperwork can be found using the link to the right, “MCBOE Health Services Documents.” I will be available during Open House, and during specified times on July 26, July 27, and August 1 to accept medications and assist with any paperwork questions or concerns. For privacy reasons, I can only meet with one family/parent at a time. Since everyone’s time is valuable, there is a sign-up sheet available through the link below. Walk-in’s are always welcome, but those with appointments will be seen first. As a reminder, please do not send ANY medications to school with your child. ALL medications must be dropped off and signed in by a parent or guardian.

MCBOE Illness and Medication Policies

Notification – A parent will be notified for the following: severe falls or injuries, head injuries, live lice, fever above 100⁰, or a suspected communicable disease. Parents are not routinely called for minor injuries and visits to the school nurse. Please make sure your child keeps a change of clothes at school! If a child soils his/her clothing, the parent will be asked to bring clothing to the school and assist the child in changing. If the student has a change of clothes at school, you will be asked to pick up the soiled clothing from the clinic within 24 hours or they will be thrown away, per MCBOE policy. Parents are asked to pick up the child from school with a fever >100⁰, vomiting and/or diarrhea, or live lice. Students must be free from fever, vomiting, and diarrhea for a full 24 hours without the aid of medication before returning to school. If your child returns to school before this time, you will be called to pick him/her up.

Medication- If a child requires medication at school, the physician must complete a Provider/Parent Authorization form, as well as a School Management Plan for chronic conditions. These forms can be found by clicking the link to the right titled “MCBOE Health Services Forms.” Parents are required to bring the forms and the medication to the school and meet with the nurse. Please do not send the medication to school with your child. Paperwork must be completed each year. Please remember to pick up your child’s medications at the end of each year; no medication can be stored over the summer.

Prevention of Illness- Good hand washing and keeping hands off the face are the best defenses against the spread of illness. Make sure you review with your child how to wash their hands, for how long, and remind them to always use soap and water. Students are also encouraged to bring a water bottle to school.

Clinic Donations- We are always in need of Band-Aids of all sizes, Kleenex, baby wipes, gloves, and sponges (for making ice packs).  Any and all donations are greatly appreciated!

Always feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I love working with and serving your children at Legacy! Thank you for the opportunity to do so!
